Invitationals

Invitational Tournaments are optional competitions that give teams a chance to practice their skills, tinker with their devices, and experience the difficulty level of tests and labs in a tournament setting. Participation does not impact team regional or state advancement.

Invitational tournaments require a separate registration fee, to be collected by the invitational tournament director. Invitationals use the official Science Olympiad rules and are usually hosted by local middle and high school teams. Some tournaments may limit participation strictly to their region, while others have "open" registration where anyone (including out-of-state teams) can participate.

All teams participating in any Invitational Tournament must be a registered member of a state Science Olympiad program.

Please note: Ohio does not sell its invitational tests or accept offers of registration payment for teams not participating in the actual tournament.

Interested In Hosting An Invitational Tournament?

New for the 2026–2027 Season: The Science Olympiad Executive Board has implemented a policy limiting any educational institution to hosting no more than two (2) Invitational Tournaments per season. Requests exceeding this limit will not be approved.

Science Olympiad Invitational Tournaments are optional events that typically charge a separate registration fee. To participate, teams must be current members of both their state and national Science Olympiad programs.

To host any Science Olympiad Tournament, Tournament Directors must submit the annual Tournament Director Form and receive approval from their State Director and the Science Olympiad National Office. Must be one of the following:

  • A State Chapter (Regional or State Tournaments)
  • An officially recognized Science Olympiad Alumni Chapter
  • A school district with a current registered Science Olympiad team and approval from the appropriate school administrator.

Please contact your State Director for the Tournament Director Form password. If requested, Invitational Tournaments will be posted on our website. Only in-person tournaments held at a single location are eligible for Science Olympiad's primary insurance coverage. Please review the Science Olympiad Copyright Statement regarding the use of Science Olympiad Rules and procedures at sanctioned tournaments.

Food Safety Notice: Tournament organizers may only provide food through licensed food vendors. Participants, volunteers, and teams may bring their own food for personal consumption.
